Unlocking AI for social good

Flametree Fundraising works with the Artificial Intelligence Research Group (AIRU) at the University of Cape Town (UCT), whose mission is to provide research and thought leadership to academia, industry, government and civil society. Their main aim is to leverage AI to improve people's lives.

Initially, we supported the team to create a clear development strategy for the Center, which included a rebranding process. We then worked together on an inspiring intellectual strategy, centered around the joint Chair programme of their co-directors, which brings together blue sky and applied AI approaches to make a significant contribution to society.

We are working through AIRU to support the national Center for AI Research (CAIR), which leverages the multidisciplinary expertise in different areas of AI across nine South African Universities. CAIR is one of the key instruments for building foundational capacity for AI research in alignment with the government strategy over the next 10 years.

In the machine learning space, we are invested in fundraising for the Center for Research in Computational and Applied Mechanics (CERECAM) at the University of Cape Town, which develops people, models, methods, software and processes in an interdisciplinary environment, to address societal challenges. CERECAM is an interdisciplinary center with members from different faculties at UCT. Our role is to support their director with strategic clarity around the development pathway and intellectual strategy of the Center, and help to match this trajectory with emerging local and international funding opportunities.
